CHURCH LIVE SUNDAY FAMILY ACTIVITIES ARCHIVE

Sunday 31st May - Birth, Wind and Fire

Today is a super-exciting day in the church calendar of the year (Pentecost), when we celebrate the coming of the Holy Spirit to Jesus followers. Its exciting because of the wind and the fire but also because this is the moment that Jesus followers really start to continue His work and it's the birth of the worldwide church.

About The Holy Spirit:

For older children, from The Bible Project

Questions:

1. How do you think the Disciples might have been feeling before the Holy Spirit came?
2. How do you think they felt after the Holy Spirit had come?
3. What did the Holy Spirit give them power to do and what was the result?
4. In Acts 2:43 it says 'Everyone was amazed, and many wonders and miraculous signs were done by the Apostles'. Can you think of any miracles you know that the Apostles were able to do through the power of the Holy Spirit?
5. In 1 Corinthians 12 Paul describe 'Gifts of the Spirit'; amazing things people can do in the Holy Spirits power. What miraculous things would you love the Holy Spirit to do through you?
6.  In Galatians 5, Paul lists the Fruit of the Spirit; things (love, joy, peace, patience, kindness, goodness, gentleness, faithfulness, self-control) that the Holy Spirit can 'grow' in your character as you follow Jesus. Are there any of these fruits that you would like the Holy Spirit to grow in your character?

Prayer: With Claire, Rhoda and Silas

4. In the bible reading that Hylton read, what words did Peter encourage the followers of Jesus to be like?
5. What do you normally do when people are unkind or angry with you?
6. It's OK and good to tell people when they have hurt you, but how else might you behave?
7. Can you think of any stories you know where people have overcome evil and nastiness, with love and goodness (Its a common theme in children's stories and sometimes ends up with the 'baddy' turning to goodness)?
8. In Matthew 5, Jesus told people to pray for people who treat them badly, why do you think this might be a good thing to do?

Sunday 17th May

Where do you feel at home? What do you think it means to 'live for God'? Tricky questions, this week we'll be looking at the next bit of Peter's first letter and what it tells us about following Jesus when the people around you don't.

Craft with Bex:

Prayer:

Father God, help me to trust You and know You more and more so that if people are ever nasty to me because of my faith in You, I can be strong for You. Help me to see ways to be good to people around me whether they know you or not.
Jesus, I pray for _______________ who I think doesn't know you yet. Please show yourself to them and help them to know You too.
Amen

Bible Passage:

Craft:

Story Video:

So, this is a story of Jesus' childhood and a day he visited the Temple as a boy. Even as a child he had the words and wisdom to teach the leaders in the Temple. When he grew up Jesus showed that because of him and what he did in his living, dying and rising again, the temple was no-longer God's 'home' on Earth, but instead his Holy Spirit would live in us, we would become his Temple on Earth. This video is the property of Saddleback Kids here's a link to the original

Questions:

1. What is the oldest stone building that you know? How long have its stones been standing together?
2. What can a building do that stones by themselves cannot?
3. How many people do you know who follow Jesus?
4. Are there any characteristics that followers of Jesus share?
5. What do you think it means in the passage when Peter calls Jesus followers 'Living Stones'.
6. Why do you think Jesus wants to bring his followers together like a building?
7. Do you want to be part of Jesus plan to change the world?

Prayer:

2. What things in your life do you think you should try not to do?
3. How can you try to build your life on the teaching of Jesus?
4. Do you know any bible verses off by heart? Could you pick a verse to memorise and keep with you always?
5. What things did Jesus do for people around him that you think you'd like to do for the people around you.

Craft

You'll need to either print off this page, or find something alternative to use.

Prayer

Dear Jesus,
Thank you that you are so amazing! Thank you that you came to Earth to live the best life and show us how to live. Thank you that you call us to live life like you did. Thank you that you were obedient to God and that you died for everyone. Please help me to learn your teaching and stories better and follow you in the things I do each day.
Amen

Final Song

Here’s a choir and orchestra (Mladifest Medugorje) made up of people from loads of countries across Europe (see how many you can spot) all singing Hosanna in their own language.
Lyrics:
Hosanna, hosanna, hosanna in the highest,
Hosanna, hosanna, hosanna in the highest,
Lord we lift up your name, with our hearts full of praise
Be exalted of Lord our God, Hosanna in the highest.

2 Challenges

1. Film yourself singing along to City on A Hill, send to me (Phil) and I can cut it all together like the Hosanna Song (you need to listen to it on headphones and record yourself on another device).
